This notion the NFL is going to die because of this concussion thing is ridiculous... On a day when the greatest postseason of any sport in America begins, the headlines on every news site is this LB from San Fran who has retired because he doesn't want to be the next Junior Seau or Jovan Belcher (may they rest in peace).
I'm not knocking what this guy has decided, nor do I diminish his reasoning one bit, but this notion the NFL is going to die because of guys like him is ridiculous.
You have thousands upon thousands of athletes, many beyond poor who find refuge in the game of football, ready to make millions of dollars at any risk.
A vast majority of football players are fearless because of the upbringing they experienced. To give that guy the ultimatum, "hey man, you can keep living in poverty, but have full health for as long as you can survive on the streets of (pick any major city in America) or you can make millions, set your family and friends up for life, and do it at the risk of incredibly debilitating repercussions when it's all said and done."
All that kid sees is the dollar figure he could be worth.
When the NFL is raking in billions upon billions, and you're a fool if you don't think the NFL makes their mansions and burns their problems with money, and they can time after time throw microscopic fractions of that at [desperate] athletes to better their bank account, you bet your bottom dollar they're going to keep on doing it.
As long as we have poor, inner city athletes who can play football, and as long as theirs an upper-middle class and wealth in this country, the NFL is going nowhere.
As they say, "follow the money".
